Hey diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle the cow jumped over the moon the little boy laughed to see such fun and the dish ran away with the spoon!
What happened to our old fashioned nursery rhymes? A story based on the Three Little Pigs fairy tale has been turned down by a government agency's awards panel as the subject matter could offend Muslims. The digital book, re-telling the classic story, was rejected by judges who warned that "the use of pigs raises cultural issues". Anne Curtis, creative director for the book said the idea that including pigs in a story could be interpreted as racism was "like a slap in the face". Becta, the government's educational technology agency, is a leading partner in the annual Bett Award for schools. 'Cultural issues' The CD-Rom digital version of the traditional story of the three little pigs, called Three Little Cowboy Builders, is aimed at primary school children. But judges at this year's Bett Award said that they had "concerns about the Asian community and the use of pigs raises cultural issues". The Three Little Cowboy Builders has previously been a prize winner at the recent Education Resource Award - but the Bett Award panel turned it down. They explained the reason for rejection was due to the fact that they "could not recommend this product to the Muslim community". They also warned that the story might "alienate parts of the workforce (building trade)". Director of Sociabubble.com asks..... Why is everything so controversial? I feel things have gone too far, certainly I feel political correctness has lost its way and these are good old fashioned nursery rhymes that are being re-told in a modern day society. I think clearly there is a need to be careful of what we say to our young and how we say it, but as adults I feel far too much emphasis is placed upon what society deems political or not. In this instance I feel it’s more about social acceptance, my concerns are more about why different cultures cannot accept each other, including our own? And after all is done and said this is a CD book for children. Creative thinking and imagination is what all young children have, not cultural issues on their mind. Our society, parents & schools have a choice to purchase this book or not. This is after all a fairy tale book, meaning it’s not true; it’s just a fairy tale story for children to enjoy. Probing deeper I asked my ‘Muslim’ husband what he thought about this news.He said, ‘It’s silly’ I asked what he thought of us eating pork he replied ‘It’s your choice, I’m not offended by you or your family eating it, but I do not wish to touch it or eat it myself’I deeply respect my husband’s wishes and he of mine, so I ask “why do authorising bodies make cultural issues so difficult, is this political correctness gone wrong”?
